Though it’s fine to consume vegetables frozen when you have to, nothing tastes as good as seasonal, fresh veggies – and buying produce this way is better for the planet too! Purchasing in season not only means that your veg will be fresher and therefore taste better, it lets you support independent local businesses, like your local farmer’s market and grocers, helping to cut down on the carbon emissions it costs to transport your food.

As well as being a more eco-friendly option, buying vegetables in season also allows you to save on your shopping spend, as you’ll be cutting out the middleman. If you have your own garden, or patch of land, like an allotment, you could even try growing your own – so you can enjoy feasting on homegrown organic leeks, or onions and lettuce from your backyard!

There’s another good reason to buy seasonally too, as it will mean you get to enjoy a more diverse diet, laden with fresh veggie produce you wouldn’t normally incorporate into your meals. Many people overlook the benefits of veg like artichokes and parsnips but when you buy according to the growing calendar, you’ll get to sample all these forgotten delights!

Once you’ve got your seasonal haul home, use the internet for fresh recipe ideas on what to do with some of the delicious seasonal produce you’ve purchased. Just check out these fluffy parsnip hash browns, which can be whipped up in just 35 minutes – or, try out this creamy parsnip and carrot soup, which would be fab served with crusty tiger bread and garnished with thyme and parsley.
